Perry Burgess, an authority on leprosy who organized international leprosy research conferences in Manila, based this 1940 novel on the life of Ned Langford, an American who contracts leprosy in the Philippines and enters exile at the Culion leper colony, known as the "Sanctuary of Sorrow." There Langford marries Carita, a Filipina also afflicted with the disease, helps build the colony's community and businesses, and spends 25 years among fellow patients before treatment eventually cures them both. The book won the National Book Award's Bookseller Discovery Award and was eventually translated into more than 50 languages.
