Walk Manila presents the built heritage of Manila gleaned from its colonial past to recent contemporary history. Aligned to Far Eastern University (FEU) Chair Emeritus Dr. Lourdes Reyes Montinala's advocacy on heritage conservation, The FEU, in its role as promoter and steward of heritage, has embarked on publishing this guidebook for a better appreciation and understanding of Manila's history and culture through a tour of built heritage sites throughout its 15 districts. At the rate historic buildings are being torn down to give way for supposed development, recognition of these sites become imperative. Walk Manila promotes Philippine history and culture by underscoring the significance and value of Manila's architectural legacies and landmarks, documenting them for posterity, and popularizing them through walking tours of the districts. The guidebook intends to kindle love for history and heritage and spark active participation in the conservation cause.
This guidebook identifies 100 historic sites and structures including those deemed as heritage-at-risk in Manila's different districts--Intramuros, Port Area, Ermita, Malate, Paco, Santa Ana, Pandacan, Binondo, San Nicolas, Tondo, Santa Cruz, Quiapo, San Miguel, Sampaloc and Santa Mesa. With appended maps, the guidebook facillitates suggested walking tours for, truly, it is only by treading and venturing through Manila's urban fabric can local color and texture, cultural nuances and quirks be better experienced and savored. Intended to provide interesting glimpses of historic Manila, the guidebook hopes to be a useful tool and reference to the curious and adventurous in ambulating through the warp and weft of the city's cultural fiber and immersing in its rich history and heritage.
