The self is the core of human reality. Unless it is discovered, every act is superficial, every moment is without meaning. Self-discovery, therefore, is the basic premise of every menaingful human activity. The reality which underlies all human experience is the reality of choice. Choice is that which makes a man man. The reality underlies all human choices is the reality of values. Clearly defined values give meaning to man's activities. A system of values permits man to coordinate an unlimited number of experiences into a meaningful unity encompassing the whole of his life. As a result, he will be able to identify his own identity and establish goals to direct his life for the present and the future. This book encourages the reader to define his personal serarch for meaning by analyzing and understanding the different systems of values and philiophies on values. By exploring what man is and always has been, what motivates man and always will, what man values and always has valued, the reader can bring order and understanding to the multiple options offered him and thus make life meaningful and vital. He is urged to evaluate alternatives and select the one that is right for him so that he can clarify his values, realize his goals, gain self-confidence and form meaningful relationships with others. He is encouraged to set up his own benchmarks against which to measure his own personal search for meaning. Through the process of differentiation and identification, he learns to pattern a system of personal values and goals after the modes which he accepts as reliable and believable.
