The Story of the Philippines: El Dorado of the Orient by Murat Halstead
Hurry up, only 2 items left in stock.
Murat Halstead, a veteran war correspondent who had covered the Civil War and the hanging of John Brown, rushed this sprawling account of the Philippines into print within months of Commodore Dewey's 1898 victory at Manila Bay. Its full title runs to nearly a hundred words, promising everything from the islands' natural riches and industries to character sketches of Dewey, General Merritt, Emilio Aguinaldo, and the Archbishop of Manila, alongside a history of the wider war with Spain. Halstead's book appeared under several imprints and title-page variants in 1898 and 1899, meeting American readers' sudden hunger to understand the country the United States had just acquired.
