The Second Law: 7 Stories by Dennis Andrew S. Aguinaldo

Ian Kasimiro is a gifted physicist obsessed with entropy, extrapolating cues from Boltzmann’s math for insight into the nature of the known universe. As martial law threatens his family, he attempts to spirit his wife and children from the Philippines.
Three decades pass. Six other tangents follow: the stories of his children and students. An desaparecido’s daughter, a colonel’s son, newlyweds, mothers, and mothers-in-law: each life is a consequence of Kasimiro’s decisions upon returning to his native land.
Dennis Andrew S. Aguinaldo teaches art and literature courses at the College of Arts and Sciences of University of the Philippines Los Baños where he proudly serves in the instruction committee of his home unit: the Department of Humanities. He is the author of A Shift of Eyes (Akdang_Bayan, 2005), Bukod sa maliliit na hayop (UP Press, 2018), and Alamat ng Sepia (Sentro ng Wikang Filipino-UPD, 2024). The Second Law: 7 stories became a possibility through a Creative and Research Writing Grant from the University of the Philippines System in 2009. Editors from The Sunday Times Magazine, The Philippines Free Press, Kritika Kultura, and The Cabinet allowed for the initial expression of its component parts
.
In 2024, he joined the group exhibit LULAN, ULILA, LIHAM, ALAGA, NAMAN in 2024 with ILCP Art Space at Parola UP Fine Arts Gallery. Currently, his interests lie in constraint-based poetry, communal forms, and ekphrasis. His wife and four children provide him with all the art he will ever need, yet, stubbornly, he still tries his hand at printmaking.
