Studs Terkel, who had already made his name with the oral history collections Hard Times and Working, applies the same approach to World War II in this Pulitzer Prize-winning book, interviewing more than 120 people from a pipe fitter's apprentice at Pearl Harbor to a crew member of the plane that dropped the bomb on Nagasaki. The interviews range across combat, the home front, and the war's economic and moral aftermath, arranged into sections that move from Pearl Harbor through the atomic bombings and war crimes trials. Pantheon Books published the book in 1984, and it won the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction.
