The Dyess Story
Hurry up, only 1 item left in stock.
William E. Dyess led the 21st Pursuit Squadron flying P-40 Warhawks over Bataan until his planes were gone, then fought on as infantry until his capture in April 1942 and the Bataan Death March that followed. Serialized in the Chicago Tribune before appearing in book form, his account of the march, his imprisonment, and his escape from the Davao Penal Colony became a wartime bestseller and one of the first accounts to bring the full brutality of Japanese treatment of POWs to the American public. Dyess himself died testing a P-38 fighter in December 1943, before this edition, edited with a biographical introduction by Charles Leavelle, appeared from G.P. Putnam's Sons in 1944.
