The book centers on the closing statement Aquino prepared for his November 1977 trial before a military tribunal that sentenced him to death, a statement the commission barred him from reading in open court, along with letters smuggled out to his family setting out his political convictions and hopes for the Philippines. First published in 1984, a year after Aquino's assassination, this edition carries a prologue by his widow, Corazon Aquino.
