Kung ang Florante at Laura ay nailathala noong 1838 at ang GomBurZa ay binitay noong 1872, ano ang nangyari sa pagitan ng 1938-1872 sa ating panitikan? Ang tanong na ito ang nais sagutin kong aklat sa pamamagitan ng isang hakàng kasaysayan tungkol sa kabuluhan ni Balagtas sa ating panitikan at sa kasaysayan ng Filipinas hanggang dulo ng ika-19 siglo. Ito rin ay kasaysayan ng panitikang popular—ng awit, korido, komedya, at pasyon—na ipinalaganap sa panahong iyon at sa aking hakà ay naging makabuluhan sa paggising sa diwang mapagpalaya ng mga Filipino.
