Born in the Philippines in 1915, Gonzalez was a poet, writer, and professor whose work was widely celebrated in both his home country and abroad.

He taught at UCLA and the University of Washington, and was named the 1997 National Artist for Literature of the Republic of the Philippines before passing away in 1999.
