Ang modernistang stilo ng kuwento ang naisagawa ni Ricky sa simula ng kanyang pagkukuwento noong maagang 1970s at napaunlad niya hanggang sa pinakahuli sa mga kuwentong nasa koleksyong ito, “Kabilang sa mga Nawawala.”
Ang storytelling ni Ricky ay hindi linear, at mas sinusundan ang sinematikong modelo ng pagkukuwento at paglalahad ng kaganapan na tila mga eksena sa pelikula. Gumagalaw ang mga eksena sa mga kaganapan sa kuwento na parang mata ng kamera, kumikilos, nagzu-zoom in o out, naka-frame na close up o long shot, at maging quick o long take ang eksena sa pamumukadkad ng mga detalye at pagkilos sa mga eksena.
Historikal ang mga kuwento niya, lubog sa pwersa ng kasaysayan ang mga tauhang pangkaraniwang dumaranas ng pinakamahapding latay sa hagupit nito, at may materialidad ang pagdanas ng mga tauhan na nakaangkla sa aktwal na pagdanas ng kaapihan at kawalan-magawa o paglaban ng mayoryang mamamayan.
