For Carlos Villaluz Francisco, that epithet was Botong, the nickname given to him by relatives on account of his dusky complexion that reminded his townmates in Angono, Rizal, of a street character who was dark-skinned and had a clownish reputation. This ascription of personal identity, however, would not remain fixed as Botong , the town artist, outgrew the reputation of Botong, the street clown. The crucial difference made was not merely that the former established a distinguished career of pintor in a town that was already known since the late 19th century for its "naif folk painters," like Juan Senson and Pedro Pinon. It was also because of the peculiarly modern relatinship between the agricultural lakeshore town astride the northeast corner of Laguna de Bay, and the capital city of Manila, barely sixteen kilometers to the north.
