“Eat sh*t” has always been part of our colorful vernacular, a regular Americanism shoved down our throat as part of America’s Manifest Destiny, with a healthy gulp of Coca-cola, a side of chili fries, and internalized inferiority complex. But a bizarre thing happened almost a hundred years after this idiomatic expression was introduced to the Philippines: We started to take it quite literally.
