Ang modernismo ay isang likhang-isip na may kinalaman sa panahon, kung saan ang mga bago ay binibigyan ng kahalagahan. Ang modernismo ay maitataya ring isang konsepto sa mga gawain ng tao na napapaloob sa isang kapanahunan sa isang kultura o kabihasnan. Sa mga sulating napapaloob sa aklat na ito, tinutukoy na ang modernismo sa musika ay konsepto ng sining na nagmula sa kulturang kanluranin at lumaganap sa buong mundo, lalong-lalo na sa Asya. Tinatampok sa mga sanaysay ang pagkatha ng musika na bagama’t nanggaling sa Kanluran ay lumaganap sa iba’t ibang sulok ng daigdig at naging tulay sa paglalahad ng mga sariling kakanyahan sa Pilipinas at sa Asya, sa konteksto ng dekolonisasyon at globalisasyon. Sa pagkatha ng musika, natutuklas ang mga sinaunang kultura at lalong nag-iibayo ang pagsulong sa sariling identidad, kung saan ang estetika, damdamin, mga estruktura, at konsepto ng mga nakaraang panahon ay binibigyang-buhay muli sa larangan at diwa ng modernismo.
