John Hersey's first book, published before he won the Pulitzer Prize for his reporting on Hiroshima, is less a chronicle of the ordinary soldiers its title suggests and more a biography of General Douglas MacArthur, tracing him from boyhood through the fall of Bataan and his escape to Australia. Hersey, who covered the Far East for Time magazine, alternates biographical chapters on MacArthur with vignettes of the Japanese invasion, producing a bestseller that helped bolster wartime morale and encourage the purchase of war bonds. Alfred A. Knopf published the book in 1942.
