Inilathala ang Isang Milyong Piso sa Liwayway ilang linggo matapos bawian ng buhay si Macario Pineda nuong ika-2 ng Agosto, 1950. Ang Kaban ni Simoun ang orihinal na pamagat ng nobela subalit pinalitan ito ng patnugutan ng Liwayway at inilathala mula Agosto 28, 1950 hanggang Mayo 28, 1951, para sa kabuuang apatnapung kabanata.
Para sa mga naunang henerasyon ng nobelistang Tagalog na nagsulat mula noong unang dekada hanggang ikaapat na dekada ng ika-20 siglo, lubhang mahalaga ang tradisyon sa pagsulat na nagmula sa pambansang bayani na si Jose Rizal. Ang Noli Me Tangere (1887) at El Filibusterismo (1891) ni Rizal ang nagmistulang bukal ng mga kaisipang binigyan ng laman at dugo sa pamamagitan ng mga istratehiya ng nobela.
Makabuluhan ang nobelang ito sa kasalukuyan sapagkat isa itong malikhang pagpupugay sa mayaman at dinamikong tradisyong pampanitikan at politikal na pinasimulan ni Jose Rizal, ipinagpatuloy ng maraming nobelistang Tagalog, at muling namulaklak sa nobelang ito na mahigpit ang pagkakahawak sa kaban ni Simoun bilang sentral na metapora ng kinakailangang pagbabago sa lipunan. —Mula sa Introduksiyon ni Soledad S.
