Octavo, 167pp. Blue cloth, title stamped in blue on spine and cover. Stated “first printing” on copyright page. Light toning to edges of cloth, internally clean, solid text block. Bookplate on front endpaper. Complete with frontispiece portrait and 10 illustrations. In the publisher’s first state dust jacket, $1.75 on front flap, chipping along top edge, a few short closed tears, bright illustrations. A scarce first printing of this early World War II memoir.
Lieutenant Colonel Juanita Redmond (1912-1979) was an Army nurse posted to Bataan and Corregidor before the Japanese invasion of the Philippines. She was one of seven who escaped to Australia before the invasion and wrote about her wartime experiences in this book. For her service, she was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, and three Presidential Unit Citations. She retired from the Army in 1969 and was buried at Arlington with full military honors in 1979
