Hubad: Ester Tapia, Cebuano to English, Translation by Merlie M. Alunan
In stock

I began reading this with some apprehension—will the gut-level, skin-tight language of Ester’s poetry, a Binisaya I grew up with, translate into the language of Merlie’s heartbreakingly beautiful poetry in English? O but I could not put the volume down. This was a delight both pure and profound. The aching familiarity, the jolts of recognition, the captivation at the irreducibility of meaning in words like bus-ok or kiwaw nga pahiyom or tinapak-tapakang sinina. And that dance, that magical dance of a poem in between two languages—when English just needs to say Simbako lang! and you let the spectre of a bisayang-daku at a train station in Hamburg, frolic at the “turnpike of memory and forgetting.”
— MARIA CRISTINA JUAN, writer and academic at SOAS, University of London
Ester Tapia’s book of poetry Hubad is a wonderful reminder of the richness and complexity of the Cebuano language. Sometimes her poems are playful; sometimes they are serious; often they conjure mysterious images. In all cases, her poems weave images, emotion, and music together; and they are strung in a flawless and satisfying way. Merlie Alunan’s English translation of Tapia’s Cebuano poetry gifts non-Cebuano readers the privilege of peering and experiencing this poet’s Cebuano mind and sensibilities.
