This second volume of Francisco Ignacio Alcina's Historia de las islas e indios de Bisayas (1668) turns to the natural world the Jesuit missionary observed during his 37 years in Samar and Leyte, cataloguing the plants, animals, and sea life of the Bisayan islands alongside accounts of typhoons, galleon disasters, and the everyday lives of local datos and principales. Much of what Alcina records here came directly from the elders and datos he interviewed, making it as much their testimony as his own. Presented in the original Spanish with English translation on facing pages, this UST Publishing House edition appeared in 2004.
