Tinipon sa kasalukuyang antolohiya ng mga maikling kuwento ni Macario Pineda upang gunitain ang ika-isandaang taon ng kapanganakan ng itinuturing na isa sa pinakamahusay na manunulat ng ika-20 siglo.
Malinaw sa mga kuwento sa antolohiya na, bagamat wala marahil sa kamalayan ni Pineda nang nagsusulat siya sa pagitan ng 1943 at 1950, nais niyang magtatag ng isang komprehensibong naratibo, sa gitna ng malaking bilang pa ng mga pangkalahatang naratibo na nilikha ng ibang manunulat, ng pagiging Pilipino sa Pilipinas sa isang tiyak na panahon: ang bansa sa panahon ng digmaan at ang bansa sa pagtatangka nitong bumangon mula sa pagkagulapay pagkatapos ng madugong digmaan. Isa itong masalimuot na proseso na sinimulan ni Pineda sa kanyang pagpapasyang maging manunulat, maging “historyador” ng isang uri ng buhay na unti-unti nang tinatalikuran ng maraming Pilipino, sa panahon ng kolonyalismong dala ng mga Amerikano. At sa kasaysayang itinatag niya sa mga akda, ang sentralidad ng digmaan ay hindi mapupuwing.
