Growing Up Filipino 3 / Collected and Edited by Cecilia Manguerra Brainard
In stock
“In this scintillating collection of stories, children’s often-surprising viewpoints are juxtaposed memorably against the stark realities of adult life: a six-year-old girl’s broken umbrella as the centerpiece of her encounter with Imelda Marcos (by Gina Apostol); a memory of kids convincing their grandmother to play zombie with them remembered in the context of her funeral (by Yvette Fernandez); or the image of a fallen fighting kite next to the wreckage of a war plane (by Danton Remoto). Once again Cecilia Manguerra Brainard has assembled a bravura collection of stories in Growing Up Filipino 3.”

“To grow up Filipino is to understand the power of stories. What makes this collection so compelling is how each coming of age narrative is imbued with the nuances of language, ritual, and gesture, family and community dynamics, and the undercurrents of a nation’s complicated history. At the heart of Growing Up Filipino 3 are layered, dynamic, questioning, inspiring characters, young and Filipino, who have stayed true to their roots.”

“Growing Up Filipino 3 presents the richness of the diverse experiences of Filipinos all over the globe. The authors of these stories show how Filipinos effectively navigate the complexities of their culture and society in order to live meaningful lives. These stories will surely serve as a catalyst for engaging discussions amongst students of all ages. Like the earlier books (Growing Up Filipino and Growing Up Filipino II), this third Growing Up Filipino book will become an important text in any classroom.”
