Garden Islands of the Great East by David Fairchild
Hurry up, only 1 item left in stock.
David Fairchild, the botanist and plant explorer behind more than 200,000 plant introductions to the United States, recounts a 1940 seed-collecting expedition through the Philippines and the Dutch East Indies aboard a replica Chinese junk called the Chêng Ho. Inspired by a boyhood meeting with naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace, Fairchild set out on the voyage in his seventies, only to see it cut short when war overtook the region. Illustrated with his own photographs, the book was published by Charles Scribner's Sons in 1944, under wartime paper restrictions noted on its copyright page.
