These stories simmer with desire—not just for carnal relief, although there’s a lot of it for sure, but also for meaning, permanence, reciprocity, and all the deliverables of a satisfying relationship. The author has a keen eye for detail—again, both physical and psychological, the hallmarks of a mature and confident sensibility at work. A fine addition to the literature of a certain age, neither too young nor too old.

May Tobias-Papa’s short story collection Found: Stories showcases her incredible talent for storytelling and character delineation. We enter her characters’ universe with ease, letting her finely nuanced writing carry us along, enjoying the ride intuitively—this is the first level of reading pleasure, the emotional satisfaction that a darn good yarn gives. And while that is a good enough reason to read this book, it is far more generous to the serious, careful reader who slows down for a second reading, and a third, to pay closer attention to the telling details—precise, illuminating—that make a setting spring to life, or to her word choices, the inevitable word that cannot be replaced by any other. It is the subsequent readings that make you forget that you are reading, but instead living inside her characters’ minds, feeling their tensions, sensing their fears, and sharing their wonderment.
