DORO Behind the Byline
In stock
This volume comes as a sequel to Afro-Asia in Upheaval: A Memoir of Front-line Reporting (2008). It shifts the focus back to the examination of domestic events that determined profoundly the course of Philippine political and social history over the decades. The author gives us both a historical and personal insight of his upbringing, the tragic impact of the Second World War. The book discusses the decline and fall of Philippine constitutional democracy with chapters including his coverage of the Stonehill corruption case which was the most sensational political scandal of the Philippines in the 1960s. This is then followed by his exposé on business transactions by the National Marketing Corporation, which led to the first major corruption scandal in the administration of President Ferdinand E. Marcos a year after his elections.
The final chapters describe his experience during the imposition of dictatorship by President Marcos during the period between September 1972 and the overthrow of his regime by the People Power Revolution in February 1986. One interesting chapter is “Cracks in the Iron Curtain” where the author offers his acute analysis, already in 1968, of the decline of the Soviet Union which has precipitated in the current global peace crisis brought about by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
