Mabigat ang nakaatang na pagkilala sa nobelang Benjamin. Ito ay sa kadahilanang ito ang “unang nobela” na isinulat sa wikang Hiligaynon at nagbigay ng karangalang-banggit kay Angel Magahum bilang “Ama ng Nobelang Ilonggo” (Father of the Ilongo Novel). Pinalawak pa nga ito ni Resil Mojares nang ibansag niya rito ang “unang Bisayanong nobela” (first Visayan novel) para hakupin pa ang ibang mga isla sa mga rehiyon ng Bisayas. Nalathala ito noong 1907, ngunit sinimulan itong isulat ni Magahum noon pang 1894. Bilang nobela, taglay nito ang mga katangian ng isang ejemplo at kronika. Ngunit sa pangkabuuan, ito rin ay maituturing na isang aklat ng wastong gawi (book of conduct) sa pagkakapasaloob sa nobela ng mga didaktikong naratibo. Matatawag itong isang kalibúgan o hybrid.
Si Angel Magahum ay tubong Molo sa lungsod ng Iloilo. Kinilala siya hindi lang bilang isang nobelista ngunit bilang sarsuwelista at kompositor din. Sa katunayan, ang pagsikat ng sarsuwela sa lungsod ng Iloilo noong unang dekada ng siglo 20 ang nagtulak sa kanya na pansamantalang iwan ang pagsusulat ng nobela at lumipat sa pagsusulat ng sarsuwela. Anak siya nina Ignacio Magahum at Simplicia Merle, kapwa negosyante ng mga telang sinamay at jusi. Nag-aral at nakapagtapos si Magahum ng bachiller en artes sa Seminario de San Vicente de Paul. Nagtrabaho siya bilang klerk at guro ng wikang Espanyol at musika. Naging editor, tagasalin, at peryodista rin siya ng mga pahayagan tulad ng Almanaque Panayanhon, Kabuhi sang Banwa, El Adalid, El Debate, at Makinaugalingon. Maliban sa nobelang Benjamin (1907), kinatha rin niya ang mga nobelang Isa ca Bihag (Ang Bihag, 1920), Palaabuton (Hinaharap, 1934), at Gugma kag Kabuhi (Pag-ibig at Buhay, 1934).
