Army Air Forces pilot William E. Dyess survived the Bataan Death March and later escaped his Japanese POW camp, becoming one of the first Americans to bring firsthand reports of Japanese atrocities in the Philippines back to the United States. Serialized with Chicago Tribune reporter Charles Leavelle and first published in January 1944, his account shocked the American public, though Dyess himself never saw its impact, having died weeks earlier while testing a P-38 fighter. This Bison Books edition carries a new introduction by Stanley L. Falk, former chief historian of the U.S. Air Force.
