His memoir follows him through the defense of Bataan, an escape from the Death March to keep fighting on Corregidor, and years of imprisonment that included forced labor, disease, and surviving the sinking of a Japanese "hell ship" bound for Japan. His hometown newspaper back in Memphis dubbed him the "Baby of Bataan," giving the book its title.
