Ang The Forest, A Personal Record of the Huk Guerrilla Struggle in the Philippines ni William J. Pomeroy ay hindi lamang isang kasaysayan ng paglahok sa rebolusyong agraryo, ito'y isa ring likhang pampanitikan.

Ang mismong istruktura ng The Forest ay may disenyong pampanitikan. Isa itong odyssey, isang buong salaysay tungkol sa isang karanasan na may simula at wakas. Para mabigkis ang kanyang mga tala, gumamit si Pomeroy ng isang kasangkapan: ang talinghaga o metapora ng gubat. Ang gubat ay kanlungan ng mga nasa underground, isang tagong daigdig kontra sa bukas na daigdig ng mga baryo, bayan at lunsod. Ang gubat ay nagiging sagisag ng lahat ng pakikibaka. Dito nagkakanlong ang mga lumalaban sa panunupil at pananakop.

Si William J. Pomeroy, isang progresibong New Yorker ay maagang nakiisa at pumanig sa mga taong pinagkakaitan ng katarungan. Isa na siyang organizer ng unyon at peryodista, nang dumating sa Pilipinas noong 1944, kasama ng mga puwersa ni General Douglas MacArthur. Pumasok siya sa teritoryo ng mga Huk noong 1947 para sa isang sulatin at dito niya nakatagpo si Luis Taruc at si Celia Mariano, ang kanyang magiging kabiyak. Naging simula ito ng kanyang pagkamulat sa kalagayan ng mga magbubukid at mamamayang Pilipino at sa kanyang kapasiyahang makisa sa kilusang mapagpalaya.
