John Silva’s A Token of Our Friendship gathers a selection of vintage photographs from the collection he shares with his partner, Jonathan Best, highlighting Philippine images of male affection from the first half of the twentieth century. Inspired by David Deitcher’s Dear Friends: American Photographs of Men Together, 1840–1918, the book turns its attention to Filipino men who stood for the camera as friends, brothers, companions, or lovers. The resulting portraits show a tenderness that feels disarming in its ease.
What the collection restores is a vocabulary of intimacy that predates the stricter expectations of masculinity that would emerge later in the century. These photographs reveal bonds that resist simple labels, whether in the way two men lean into each other, clasp hands, or simply share space with a comfort that speaks for itself.
