"In an era ruled by influencers, where a primary source of information is TikTok, and where writers need "followers" to be noticed, Doreen Fernandez is--is (present tense)a presence we so need. Not just as a memory or inspiration, not just an award, but a presence. A voice, a word, a persona and her values and ethics, a talent, an authority, a woman-all that. Doreen Fernandez is the authenticity and honesty of knowledge and talent committed to serving the richness of Filipino culture. And that Doreen Fernandez lives in us through this book." - Thelma San Juan - Former lifestyle editor, Times Journal, Manila Chronicle, Philippine Daily Inquirer and Metro magazine
"The most memorable writing lets your senses come to life. If words can make you salivate as you picture hot Filipino kitchens, steaming pots, freshly chopped ingredients, and live produce walking or wriggling before they become the dishes of your childhood memories and our collective culture, then the writing has done its job. Such is the experience of reading the essays in Sangkap, which are packed with information and history-but which ultimately allow you to savor every taste, catch every aroma. -Alya B. Honasan- Editor and Writer
"This book is venerable, glorious space! Here food, love, science, and art co-mingle, interact, cross-mix, blend, breed, enrich, to deepen and fertilize life, and our zest for it. It is a veritable geography of the senses: of shapes and colors, textures and feels, scents and aromas, of the fizz and sizzle, of pungency and delicacy. Soil and sea: in their depth and expanse, we put down rOots, we bloom and flourish, we are way more than nourished. Not by any stretch of the imagination is this just about kitchens." -Karina Africa Bolasco - Ex-Publisher, Anvil and Ateneo Presses Book Publishing Consultant
