Where do we sit? How do we sit? Why do we sit? The book counts the ways. And this is just but the first sitting in the exploration of the many context within which the Philippine chair finds its place in the furniture of history.

Chairs are products and agents of their socio-cultural contexts. They reflect and affect society. The combination of the words salumpuwit, bangko, and silya is evocative, encapsulating the plural Filipino chair lexicon: Salumpuwit is a Filipino word meaning "ass-catcher;" bangko is from the Austronesian "bangku;" and silya is from the Spanish "silla." The richness of the vocabulary of the chair in Philippine life bespeaks of the level of hybridity and foreign influences that were successfully appropriated in its production, manifested not only in the physical aspects of craftsmanship and architectonics of style, but in the embedded ideological meanings and values as well. In this respect, the chair becomes a physical and symbolic site designed and created for bodies to inhabit. Chairs can be symbols of authority. They can be instruments of discipline. They can reflect international trends and the politics of style. Understanding chairs requires insights into the many forces that have affected their forms and functions.

A look back at Filipino craftsmanship

Amazing book with full-page, often colorized historical photos of chairs throughout Filipino culture. The commentary provides helpful socio-historical context (starting with the title which showcases the variety of words we have for chair). Finally, as a woodworker who also makes chairs, I found this book to be eye-opening when learning about the rich history of craftsmanship in the Philippines and instructive when drawing inspiration from all the various forms of chairs, this book has everything from royal thrones all the way to common vernacular furniture. Even if you're just somewhat intrigued by furniture, this book is worth having as a historical reference and conversation starter.

Highly recommend Philippine Books

I had a positive experience with Philippine Books! I needed a second copy of a book that was difficult for me to source, and Raf came through. My delivery arrived much sooner than expected, and was well-protected during transit and arrived in perfect condition. I'll definitely be returning and checking here first for all my future book purchases and highly recommend Philippine Books to others.
