Salumpuwit: Chairs in Filipino Life by Gerard Lico

I got this book for my Filipino brother who has a degree in industrial design and enjoys making furniture. He enjoyed the historical information about the various furniture styles. My only caveat is that I didn't realize how small this book was, I thought it was going to be coffee table book-sized but it was much smaller. Great topic and information though!

Amazing book with full-page, often colorized historical photos of chairs throughout Filipino culture. The commentary provides helpful socio-historical context (starting with the title which showcases the variety of words we have for chair). Finally, as a woodworker who also makes chairs, I found this book to be eye-opening when learning about the rich history of craftsmanship in the Philippines and instructive when drawing inspiration from all the various forms of chairs, this book has everything from royal thrones all the way to common vernacular furniture. Even if you're just somewhat intrigued by furniture, this book is worth having as a historical reference and conversation starter.
